Meet Charmain Nicome

Social Worker

Through the issues that the residents have identified as being key to creating the best community for themselves and for their children, a number of projects have been brought forward to improve community life. These are as follows:

Rebuilding the Community Centre

Rebuilding the community centre will serve residents of Gonzales as well as the population in the surrounding area with a communal venue in which local Proposed Gonzales Community Centretraining, social and recreational activities and programming can occur. Therefore, reconstruction of the Community Centre must be undertaken by the relevant Ministry using local labour (as much as possible) and should take into consideration the proposed design for the community centre prepared by Mr. Sonny Tomic (an architect from Canada) after consultations with residents from Gonzales. The proposed centre will enable various activities to occur simultaneously. Furthermore, that this centre include the option for the development and expansion of such things as a local market for cottage industries, other businesses and social opportunities.

Expand the Gonzales Sheikers' Panyard

Discussion around an expanded Panyard Centre took place during a community meeting in March 2005. Resulting from this discussion Proposed Sports Field and Panyardwas identification of a preliminary concept plan for a Pan Yard to be developed. A preliminary concept was drawn by a professional Urban Designer volunteer from the Canadian Institute of Planners who participated in community meetings in Gonzales.  However, this design needs to be further developed and presented back to the residents for further input to ensure that it fits with the suitability for a Pan Centre. It is also important that any development of a Pan Theatre involve the citizens throughout the design-build stages.

Retrofit the Robert Greenidge Sports Field

The Robert Greenidge Sports Field must be upgraded and expanded in the easterly direction utilising land that is currently owned by the city.  Gonzales Fruit GardensThe upgrade should be based on the concept design approved by the Community Improvement Planning Group. This expansion and upgrading will include moving the basketball court and laying out the area to accommodate a new basketball court, football field and cricket pitch, extending the pavilion, laying out a playground for the children and a car park. As a part of the improvement of this facility, an area has been earmarked for a fruit tree and vegetable community garden.

Solid Waste Management

The direct approach is concerned with improving the garbage collection process in Gonzales. The recommendation is that an effective solid waste collection system be developed by improving the type of waste receptacles used: two types of receptacles have been identified: a concrete bin; and, steel drums (Barrel-type).

Part of the plan is to encourage residents living in parts of the Proposed Plan for Garbage Disposalcommunity where house-to-house collection takes place to build receptacles such as wire bins outside their properties to hold garbage until collection, which will prevent the dogs from accessing the garbage. There is an economic benefit to this recommendation as a resident or group of residents could start a small business geared towards making these wire bins and selling them firstly to other residents in Gonzales and ultimately to persons in the wider society.

A prototype bin is to be developed for the following location: at the Community Centre and the corner of Lange and Jubilee Streets. This approach has been agreed upon because these areas have adequate land space to accommodate the structure. It also deems important to create a system for monitoring the activities of contractors employed by the Port of Spain Corporation to collect garbage. This system must be implemented in collaboration with the residents of Gonzales. Furthermore, ensuring that the bins are sanitary, the bins will be washed with an antibacterial solution after garbage is collected.

Splash Pads (Stand Pipes)

Splash PadsEast Port of Spain suffers with a lack of water occasionally which is why water is an important commodity for Gonzalians. Until water can be provided for all citizens within their homes water has to be sought from these standing pipes located on the streetside. In the meantime, residents have urged that more stand pipes be placed in Gonzales.
